Concerted efforts to combat desertification

The Secretary-General of the Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr. Mona Ali Mohamed Ahmed reemphasis on describing the problem of desertification as the Sudan first environmental problem and it entails many economic, social and environmental problems, such as an increase in poverty rates, food insecurity, threats to livelihoods and environmental degradation.

Dr. Mona, noted during the second meeting of the National Network of Research Institutes and Centers related to combating desertification today in the Council about the importance of cooperation and Active participation in the follow-up and implementation of the objectives of the International Convention to Combat Desertification, inquire about the conditions of affected communities and supporting them to adapt to the prevailing conditions. She called network to prepare scientific research and practical goals that help the council support the Council on its mission and contribute to addressing the negative effects.

On his part, the head of the network and the director of the Center for the Reclamation of Dry and Desertified Lands at Bakht Al-Ruda University, Professor Abdul Salam Othman Sayed Ahmed, explained  that the meeting approved the organization’s regulation and framework work plan for the network, and the celebration of  the World Environment Day and the International Day for Desertification next June has been shaped , with the participation of the state focal points for desertification. Moreover, it was also agreed to hold the network’s first introductory workshop in El Obeid city
