The Red Sea Environment and Natural Resources Council in cooperation with the Federal Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources – Training Course in Environmental Information Management

The Red Sea Environment and Natural Resources Council in cooperation with the Federal Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources organized a training course in managing environmental information and data using geographic information systems. The training course was held from 22/5/2022 to 25 25/5/2022 in the hall of the Faculty of Earth Sciences at Red Sea University.This training course is within the framework of a project to strengthen the  targeted national capacities aimed at improving the decision-making process and circulation of environmental commitments.Dr. Nadia Hassan Omar, the government coordinator for the project, explained that the project strengthen national capacities targets all states of Sudan in order to raise the capacity of the relevant actors  to environmental issues, and the Red Sea State is the last state in these courses.Whereas, Professor Manal Ahmed Abdel-Jabbar, the administrative director of the project, made it clear that the Red Sea State has a special environmental advantage that differs from the other States of Sudan, which is the marine environment. Therefore, the course in the State is targeted the bodies related to marine environmental issues Such as, the College of Marine Sciences, the Marine Research Institute, the Fisheries Research Institute and the Marine Reserves Administration, The Department of Fisheries, the Marine Ports Authority and the Red Sea University, in addition to representatives of the State Council of Environment and Natural Resources.Professor Fath Al-Rahman Youssef, Deputy Project Adviser in the field of GIS, and the lecturer in this course stressed that this course is one of the important courses in strengthening the ecosystem, and it is an intensive course for four days, during which the student will receive a number of lectures in the field of geographic information systems and it depends largely on the use of computers.Dr. Taha Al-Taher Ahmed Badawy, representative of the Environment and Natural Resources Council, Red Sea State, welcomed the delegation of the Federal Supreme Council for Environment and Natural Resources. Where he talked about the specificity of the of the Red Sea State, noting that the State has an environmental law, stressing that in the Council they are keen on what is stated in the three Rio Agreements and considered that the state is important for all of Sudan.Overviews of the Capacity Enhancement projectThe project to strengthen targeted national capacities is to improve the decision-making process and mainstreaming global environmental commitments.The project is aimed to target and strengthen national capacities to achieve and maintain global environmental outcomes. The project will be implemented through five components. Among the main activities of the project: Strengthening targeted capacities, strengthening monitoring, an integrated system for environmental data and information management, targeted training, raising awareness, and updating the self-assessment of national capacities.The strategy aims to take a long-term approach to institutionalizing capabilities. In addition, the project aims to involve others who are not direct stakeholders in the project’s activities.General aims:The overall objective of the project is to enhance Sudan’s ability to achieve environmentally sound and sustainable development that contributes to protecting the global environment as defined in the three Rio conventions. The expected result of the project is that Sudan will be able to achieve global environmental benefits with less transaction cost and effort, in addition to other benefits.
