Sudan launches the first ever report on the state of the environment and outlook
The Sudan Environment Report and Outlook for 2020 is the first of its kind to comprehensively assess the country’s environmental conditions and the trends affecting them. The report follows a previous issue-based environmental report, the Post-Conflict Sudan Environmental Assessment, which compiled field studies on the environmental impacts of conflict in Sudan that ended with the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement.
The State of the Environment and Environmental Outlook report assesses the biophysical, social and economic conditions in the country and presents them in an integrated manner, and ultimately indicates the paths that will lead the country towards a future based on sustainable development.
Through the use of the analytical framework of drivers – pressure – status – impact – response, the report not only identifies the causes and effects of environmental trends, but also addresses country policy and institutional response mechanisms. It begins with an overview of the country’s geography and social economy, and an explanation of its environmental management system. It then discusses environmental aspects under the topics of atmosphere, land resources, water resources, biodiversity, persistent environmental issues and environmental issues.
