Efforts to Reconstruct Umm Jawasir in the Northern State

Higher   Council for Environment and Natural Resources (HCNER) and Building Resilience in the face of Climate Change within Traditional Rain fed Agricultural and Pastoral Systems in Sudan project launched the solar water plant in the Umm Jawasir (UMJA) in the Northern State. The solar water plant was part of water component. The station irrigates  ​​45 Faddan of the Umm Jawasir project. This is in effort to rehabilitate the project and benefit the citizen in the area.

Professor Faisal Ahmed Al-Hajj, the National Director of the Project praises the high efficiency of the station and he refers to the circulation of the program to the other states. He asserts the importance of the water component, which receives more than half of the project budget.

In this context, the engineer, Muhammad Farouk Hassan, from the Salmaniya Engineering Technical Company, explained that the station operates with a production capacity of 100 cubic meters per hour, and he said that replacement and substitution of diesel pumps led to fuel saving and operational cost to zero.

Engineer Ibrahim Sorour Bellah, a member of the project’s technical committee and representative of the Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources, which is  responsible for the water component, pointed out that, according to the concluded memorandum of understanding with the project, the duty of the ministry is continuation on water projects in the rehabilitating existing stations, establishing new stations, excavations and earth dams, and conducting studies on  the characteristics of the areas to determine the suitable  needs.

On her part, Intisar Ali Saleh, the project supervisor at the United Nations Development Program, stressed the need to establish women’s farms and train women in project management, besides join agricultural associations, register and link the agricultural associations to financing institutions.  She affirms that 35 percent of the project’s fund and activities are allocated to women and it receives great attention from the donors.

While Dr. Talal Sayed Abdel Halim, from Agricultural Research Authority and advisor to the agriculture component of the project, appeal to the farmers to diversify crop and grow varieties with high economic returns.

For his part, the mayor of Umm Jawasir, Abdul Rahim Bey Al Hafian, praised the efforts of the project and its dedication to the issues and needs of the citizens, specially the provision of water   is the backbone of life. He expressed his thanks and gratitude for the project, which put into effect the village’s dream and made it reality. He enunciates   his hope that the remaining activities to be completed, so as to help 3,000 families in the area.
